Are you ready? Let’s go!

How to Uninstall Better Discord ?

Well, there are two ways. How did I install my copy of Better Discord? The old-fashioned manual way. But before we go over this, let’s talk about the second way – installing it directly in Discord.

The second way is the easiest, you download it from BetterDiscord’s website and Drag-and-Drop right in Discord! It’s really easy, if you want to check out how to do that, I’ve written a tutorial on doing this here.

Now both require an extra file – abdata*. Discord reads this file and uses the information inside to install Better Discord.

So, if you’re wanting to uninstall, what do you need? You’ll need two things: A backup of the original abdata* file that came with your copy of Discord (for reference), and an unzipping program like 7-Zip or WinRAR.

To get this abdata* you can search your computer for it or just use the manual way of installation! Either way, you’ll want to find this file on your computer. This guide will be using 7-Zip on Windows, but feel free to use any unzipping program that works best for you. Let’s get started!

Uninstalling Better Discord the old fashioned way

1. Find your abdata* files!

It should be in \Discord\app-0.0.297\abdata*. If this is where it’s at, great! This is normal and you can move on to step 2.

2. Delete the “plugins” folder in abdata*!

This is where all of Better Discord’s code lies. If you can find the plugins folder inside your abdata* file, good – remove it. Be sure to keep a backup of this somewhere because once you delete it, it’s gone forever unless you find it again. You won’t be able to restore this file from your backup, Discord will make a new one on startup and you’ll have to re-install Better Discord (you can do it manually or Drag-and-Drop).

3. Remove the abdata* file itself!

This is easy, just delete it! But make sure to keep another copy of it somewhere safe.

Uninstalling Better Discord directly in Discord (Dragging-and-Dropping installation)

Just Drag-and-Drop the file right back into Discord! It will ask you if you’re sure you want to overwrite this, just say yes and it’ll be gone!

So you deleted the plugins folder and overwrote your abdata* file with the old one, but now Discord won’t open. You need to reinstall Discord! Here’s how:

Reinstalling Discord after Better Discord is uninstalled (manual installation)

Well, it should auto-reinstall if you delete this file, but if it doesn’t, here’s how to reinstall Discord after Better Discord is uninstalled.

1. Find your abdata* files!

It should be in \Discord\app-0.0.297\abdata*. If this is where it’s at, great! This is normal and you can move on to step 2.

2. Delete the “abdata” folder inside abdata*!

This is where your Discord installation comes from, so if you delete this, you’ll have to reinstall Discord again. Don’t worry though, it’s easy enough to do! Just make sure you backup this file somewhere safe until you’re done with this guide.

3. Remove your current abdata* file!

You can do so by going into it and deleting the “abdata” folder inside, but you probably want to leave this file here for reference later or in case there was a mistake and you need something from it. You’ll have to reinstall Discord.

Reinstalling Discord after Better Discord is uninstalled (Drag-and-Drop installation)

Just remove the file and it’ll reinstall! Easy enough, no need to do anything else on your part! You should be good to go again! If you’re still having problems though, make sure you restore your backed up abdata* file and that you didn’t miss any files when uninstalling Better Discord.

Common Issues (NEW as of 1.2)

If you’re having issues with Better Discord after uninstalling it, try deleting all of your saved stuff inside the ‘state’ folder. This is located at C:\Users\*User Name*\AppData\Local\BetterDiscord.

If you’re not using Discord’s Update feature to update Better Discord, you’ll want to check the files yourself after each major release for any files that may have been added or removed from their originals inside your abdata*. Make sure none of these misplaced files are causing issues!

If you’re having issues with Better Discord after uninstalling it, make sure to completely remove all files and folders (and the registry too if you’re using Windows) before reinstalling. Do not go back after deleting something thinking “I’ll install this later” or else it’s possible Discord won’t recognize some of your stuff.

If there are still issues after you’ve followed all this, either find the file that is crashing Discord or go back to an earlier version of Better Discord. If you’re on Curse/Twitch’s auto-updater and it won’t update to the latest version, uninstall it via \Discord\BetterDiscordApp-0.0.297\uninstall.exe and then use the same file to reinstall a version from our website or from our Discord server.

*data is a hidden folder. If you don’t want to unhide the folders, just press CTRL+H and it should let you view hidden files too!
